2017, a fresh start for an old aim

Happy New Year people, 2016 was an interesting year, one filled with many good times but also a few bad ones. However, 2017 is going to be a whopper. Here are my 2017 resolutions, aims and goals! GOAL 1: My fastest ever Marathon. Sounds pretty simple right? The plan,  do some run training and go faster than 3hrs 28mins. GOAL 2: Fastest ever 1/2 Ironman. Another simple one, go faster over a half ironman than I have before. It’s a…

Ironman Mallorca 2016 Review

Last week, we travelled to the beautiful Island of Mallorca for the 2016 version of Ironman Mallorca (sponsored by Thomas Cook!!!). Herein follows a review of the weekend, I’m going warts and all, so I apologise for the occasional swear words – mostly from the wife!! The boring bits first; we travelled via EasyJet from Luton, booked a hire car via RecordGo and had our bikes transported by John (and his team) from Cycle Transfer. Speaking of bike transport, if your…

A few days before Ironman Mallorca 2016

After twelve months of hard training and plenty of sacrafices, the clock is slowly ticking down on the last few days before Ironman Mallorca 2016. Athletes who train and race for financial reward often talk about A and B races for the year. This is my A race – largely because it’s my only race of the year (unless you count the local XC race – which is actually more of a grudge match with one of my best and oldest…

Final few weeks of preparation for Ironman Mallorca

The clock is literally counting down on the last few weeks of preparation before we jump on a plane and head to the Balearics for Ironman Mallorca 2016!! Whilst training continues my mind has shifted to thoughts of logistics, insurance, kit, hire cars, airport parking, taxis and all the hundred other small things that need doing. Training over the past few weeks has consisted of working hard at swimming, keeping my legs turning over on the bike and putting some…

Swim training, filming and Letchworth outdoor pool

Time is ticking along and Ironman Mallorca is getting closer. As a result, my swim training has increase a bit and the 25m pool at Flitwick was getting a little boring. Therefore, I went over to Letchworth outdoor pool last week. It’s a brilliant place, 50m of pool, outdoors, 80 years old and the sun was shining! When I’m not training, I spend my days coding websites, designing stuff and making nice movies and videos – therefore, we decided to…

The power of Beetroot Juice

Here at one40point6 towers, we start the day with a nice glass of Beetroot Juice, largely because is makes our pee look an interesting colour and much laughter is enjoyed by the kids when Daddy has pink wee!! There are however some benefits to training on Beetroot Juice, according to science, beetroot juice contains nitrates which increase the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen and therefore increases exercise capacity. Basically, drink beetroot juice, have pink wee, run like…

Start the week with a swim

As you might have noticed from previous ramblings on this very site, swimming is not one of my talents. However, being a hobbying triathlete kinda requires the ability to at least swim. In the past, my average ability on a bike and running has masked my terrible swimming. This year however, I’ve spent a fair amount of time in the pool and lake trying to improve my swim…the result is a slightly better swim, but still rubbish! So, come Ironman…

Sunday lunch…run

Family commitments meant that running early doors this morning was not feasible, so once the kids had been dispatched to a birthday party I took the opportunity to trot around the lanes from Silsoe back to Ampthill via Shefford. After a few very tough runs over the past few weeks, it was nice to feel good and not like every step was going to cause my lungs to explode. I even managed to arrive home at the right time to…

Weekend bike ride, miles, smiles and punctures

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The short version of ride goes something like this: Wake up early and ensure body is sufficiently watered and fed Squeeze into lycra Ride bike Comrade punctures Comrade has deep section rims and uses valve extenders (!?!) Everyone knows valve extenders don’t work Comrade breaks valve off inner tube whilst trying to inflate tyre Inner tube supplied by yours truly is only just long enough for deep rims (80mm needed, 60mm ‘in stock’) Wrestle with mini pump to get…
