Here at one40point6 towers, we start the day with a nice glass of Beetroot Juice, largely because is makes our pee look an interesting colour and much laughter is enjoyed by the kids when Daddy has pink wee!! There are however some benefits to training on Beetroot Juice, according to science, beetroot juice contains nitrates which increase the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen and therefore increases exercise capacity. Basically, drink beetroot juice, have pink wee, run like Mo Farah!
And look, it’s official, here is what the NHS says:
Beetroot is a good source of iron and folate (naturally occurring folic acid). It also contains nitrates, betaine, magnesium and other antioxidants (notably betacyanin). More recent health claims suggest beetroot can help lower blood pressure, boost exercise performance and prevent dementia
I don’t think WADA have any plans to ban beetroot juice just yet, but I would suggest stocking up now should they have a change of heart!
