Open water swimming: Episode 1 of 2013 Season

I’m very lucky to live close to the wonderful Box End Lake, which makes open water swimming easily accessible in the warmer months of the year. However, the warmer months of the year seem few and far between!!

This morning, my buddy and I headed for the lake for our first open water swimming session of the year. I wasn’t expecting the scene with which we were greeted; about 60 guys and gals in the water. The changing rooms were stacked out. Unbelievable.

I wasn’t looking forward to the ‘hit the water’ moment, but it wasn’t actually too bad, 11°C isn’t actually that cold (just don’t hang around). There wasn’t any time for messing around. Once in, I was off. 800 meters later, I was having some problems with leaky googles and jumped out of the water, grabbed my old pair and set off on another 800 meters. Lovely.  My new wet suit was spiffing and despite cold hands and feet when I emerged from the water, all was good with the world. Coffee and home, happy days!
