You might have noticed that I’ve put my cards on the table and written down my goals for the year. The first of which is a sub-20 minute 5km run. In the first instance I’d be happy with 19:59, anything under 20 mins is the goal.
If you are not familiar with the Park Run events then check them out, they are great little events, put on free of charge by dedicated volunteers. The free bit is pretty important for me as it gives me an opportunity to ‘race’ without having to pay out on entry fees.
And so to my first attempt of 2013 at breaking the 20 minute barrier. It was a reasonably cold day, wind free day and in a small field I found myself near the front. The leader was miles ahead but I had a father and son combo to chase. After a steady start I got into my running, felt comfortable, kept checking my watch for a 6:23/mile pace…all was going well. I started to feel the pace with about 1/2 mile to go, but tried to push on an ignore my legs and lungs. A short sprint / quickening of the pace at the finish and…..I missed the 20 minute mark by 5 seconds, gutted.
Anyway, demonstrates that it is more than possible, I live to fight another day.
